What's in Your Spiritual File Cabinet?

What if you could fill a file cabinet full of items to give you a spiritual boost whenever you might need something? What would you put in it? As I thought about this, I thought I would fill the drawers with promises, strength and courage, wisdom, and gratefulness.

The first drawer would be filled with God’s promises. There are so many wonderful promises in God’s Word that we can draw on when needed. One of my favorite ones is taken from Romans 8: 31b-39. “If God is for us, who can be against us? …  For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.” God’s love for us is good and everlasting.

In the second drawer I would put strength and courage. Life throws all kinds of problems and difficulties at us daily. We have a choice as to how we will respond to whatever befalls us. The Lord gives us sufficient strength to prevail and courage to pass through the difficulties. In Joshua 1:9, God spoke to Joshua saying, “Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” The strength and courage that God offered to Joshua is available to each one of us as well.

The third drawer would be filled with wisdom. I marvel at Solomon’s wisdom and often find myself praying as Solomon did for God to guide me in difficult circumstances. Sometimes we need to make difficult decisions about things, that on our own, we would not know how to decide. In those times, I find myself pleading to God to guide me. Fortunately, the wisdom that God made available to Solomon is available to anyone who asks.

Finally, in the last drawer, I would put gratefulness. An attitude of gratitude certainly makes a positive difference in one’s life. No matter what happens, there is always a blessing to be found in it. There are so many daily blessings that the Lord gives us: life, breath, food, shelter, intelligence. The list could go on and on. Be thankful in all things.

Our brains are like a file cabinet that we can fill with thoughts and ideas to recall whenever we need them. Relying on God’s promises, strength and courage, and wisdom, we are filled with blessings that overflow into praise for our wonderful God, our Savior, Redeemer, and Friend.
